Embedded Clipping Path - A Quick Guide
Monday, 09 August 2010 14:12

Clipping paths are quite useful when you edit images. In this article we will show you the technique of embedded clipping path.

The first step in embedded clipping path is to select the portion you want to keep or remove. Generally, most of the popular editing software has ‘magic wands’ which performs this job and allows selection. Keep in mind that you may require usage of other selection tools for performing fine adjustments.

Next step is to see whether inverting your selection is required or not. You might have to invert the selection in order to select the image you want to keep or in other words ‘not make transparent’. Make sure to do this before you convert your selection to path.

Third step is to convert the selection into path. This is needed in order to make fine adjustments to the shape needed. Basically a work path is the vector outline of curves, lines and nodes. With the help of this vector outline, you can exclude or include parts of your images or create shape of your choice. You can also follow outlines. Creating work path is much easier from selection than starting from the scratch- which can be done as well.

Now next comes editing the work path. Depending on what you require, you can edit the path simply by adding or deleting nodes, or move curves or even lines and achieve the desired shape. It can allow you to follow tightly or loosely.

After you have done all this and achieved the desired shape, now is the time to save your work path. You should save this image in a suitable format as clipping path. Make sure you know which type of format your application supports. For instance, some use both TIFF and EPS images to embed clipping path while others doesn’t.

Note that in this technique we have not deleted the unnecessary part of the image. This is because the clipping path will itself perform the job when you place it in the page layout application. One major advantage of not removing the unnecessary area of the image is that the unnecessary area is still available to you in case you feel that you need to tweak the clipping path or ‘turn it off’.
