McMaster University : The First on Google’s Street View Project

Late last year, Google’s Street View launched a few of their interactive 360 degree projects of different locations including conservative countries like Israel and even post-tsunami Japan. They also officially launched their controversial project on capturing businesses’ indoor premises which not many have approved. It sounded promising and futuristic for costumers from different countries can visit and walk through shops and restaurants with ease online. However, many business owners raised privacy issues and concerns in response.

On the other hand, Google’s Street View project also includes capturing universities and their facilities too. In response, the Canadian University, McMaster University opened its doors. They are the first to be included in this interactive project.

The picture taking of the McMaster University took Google’s staff no more than 4 months to complete. They were taking picture starting July with their signature environment-friendly three-wheeled pedicabs armed with high definition cameras. They shooting ended by late November of last year.

Like how regular 360 degree photography process goes,  the series of images were stitched together using GPS data and of course aligned to their respective location on Google’s maps. The creation on this interactive panorama also opens a lot of doors for McMaster University. One and the very obvious is exposure. Aspiring students would love to get a preview of what it’s like in McMaster – how it looks, what it offers, etc. According to Gord Arbeau, Public and Community Relations Director for the University, “The search engine giant first approached the university because of the “natural beauty” of its walkways, and pedestrian-friendly campus.” He then added that, “Street View is a “great opportunity for us to showcase McMaster to the world.”

Of course not to raise any privacy issues like Google’s been having lately, visible and identifiable face including license plates were of course blurred out.
